Loengu tutvustus:
What happens to relationships with places when war forces people to leave their homes? How can a place extend beyond its physical boundaries, and how can new places become part of people’s sense of attachment without replacing places left behind? These questions provide a starting point for exploring direct and indirect urbicide, displacement, and emergent urban resilience from a geographical perspective. The lecture examines how internally displaced persons reshape spaces in host cities through temporary uses, camps, and temporary public spaces. It discusses the concepts of place elasticity and „displaced place attachment“ to explore how attachment to place can survive, transform, and extend across distance. Through examples of spaces created by IDPs, the lecture shows how displacement can generate not only loss and rupture, but also new urban practices, forms of diversity, and new modes of attachment. The lecture also focuses on return: where might people return to, and what makes return possible? Using academic re-emigration to Ukraine as a case study, it explores the potential for return and its regional dimensions. Ultimately, Between Places is about the spaces in between – between home and elsewhere, departure and return, loss and adaptation – and the diverse ways in which people continue to create, experience, and belong to places in times of war.
